Issaroh

Issaroh is a scholar and the first magi. To his knowledge, he is the only mortal to still be living that grew up when the gods and goddesses were still on the mortal realm. Issaroh’s magical aptitude is actually quite low and he theorizes that after the deities left, they instilled those born after their departure with more magical affinity. Despite his low magical aptitude, Issaroh has studied magic extensively and is well-versed in a myriad of spells and their different applications.

After the deities abandoned the mortal realm, a plague took root in Primerra. In the past, priests would pray to the goddess Seraph to cure those ridden by the plague. Without the goddess, scholars raced to find a cure, healers were unable to keep up with the speed the plague spread.

When Issaroh’s wife became infected, he fell into a deep depression. He had little hope that a cure would be discovered before the quick moving disease took her. When his son also started to show signs, Issaroh was paralyzed with fear. It was then that Brontidus, a Ywagwai appeared to him.

Brontidus offered Issaroh a deal, his soul in exchange for access to all the schools of magic and one wish. Issaroh wished to find the cure for the plague. Brontidus took Issaroh to the now submerged Library of Laevin where he studied past plagues, their causes and cures. After weeks of study, with a possible cure in hand, Issaroh left the library to return to his family.

Upon his return, Issaroh discovered that both his wife and son had passed. With no one there, his house was ransacked and every memento of the two was gone. Their bodies were burned and interred in a mass grave leaving Issaroh with no headstone to morn at. To make matters worse, scholars had discovered the same root causes and remedies Issaroh had and if he had stayed to work with them, they might have come up with a cure before his family died.

Issaroh understood then that the deal with Brontidus wasn’t a blessing but a curse. As a magi, he would live much longer than an average human and not age. He spent decades wandering Primerra, running from his pain. All magi have the ability to see the aura of magic around every living thing. As Issaroh wandered, he realized more sorcerers were appearing with the aura of magi, a brilliant rainbow of pulsing colors.

Issaroh eventually returned to the Library of Laevin and dedicated his life to researching plagues so no one would have to endure what he had. When not in the library, he talked with fellow magi and sought out powerful sorcerers to warn them of the cost of a Ywaigwai’s deal. Eventually, Issaroh forgave himself and noticed that he began to age again, at first slowly, but then rapidly.

Anticipating his life is coming to an end, Issaroh has been fervently trying to write down all his knowledge of magic and the gods and goddesses to preserve it for future generations.
